The article is dedicated to the linguistic bases of teaching the syntax of a complex sentence in high school. Systematic study of the syntax of a complex sentence is the most important in the implementation of students’ speech activities and achieving the goal of language education in general. The article clarifies the extent to which knowledge of syntax meets modern requirements, characterizes the theoretical basis for the implementation of the competence approach in language education, analyzes the state of various scientific studies of syntactists, and determines the linguistic basis of competence methods of teaching the syntax of complex sentence.
