THE STRUGGLE OF PRINCE MSTISLAV MSTISLAVICH THE DARING FOR THE CONTROL OF HALYCH (TO THE 800TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE APPROVAL OF THE PRINCE IN THE HALYCH LAND)

Abstract

The article considers an important period in the development of Halych and Halych land – from the middle of the second to the beginning of the third decade of the 13 thcentury. Using the crisis in the administration of the region, the ruling elites of the Kingdom of Hungary and the Principality of Cracow attempted to occupy the Galician region by military intervention and inter-dynastic marriage. Due to the conflict with the Cracow prince Leszek the White, King Andrew II became the de facto leader in Prykarpattia at this time, under whose patronage the Kingdom of Galicia (Regnum Galiciae), vassal of the Hungarian crown, emerged, whose nominal ruler was the young King Koloman’s son Andrew. The expansion was carried out under the auspices of the Roman Curia, led by Pope Innocent III. Shortly after these events, the Novgorod prince Mstislav Mstislavich the Daring, who at that time was one of the most authoritative rulers of Russia, began to pay attention to the situation in the Galician principality. During 1215–1221, this prince, after several attempts, seized and established himself in Halych.
