Abstract

The subject of the article is the restoration of the Assumption Cathedral, one of the principal architectural monuments of the XII century in Halych, on the basis of architectural and archaeological investigations, study of the remains of the foundations and architectural fragments. The size of the Cathedral was established through analogies with the Chernihiv architectural monuments (Fig. 1) defined by a certain ratio between volumes and spatial characteristics of churches. Comparison of the preserved fragments of the Halych Cathedral with details of the Volodymyr-Suzdal Romanesque architectural school served to reconstruct its architectural plastics (Fig. 10) and confirm the participation of Halych stonemasons in the constructions of
the Borys and Hlib Church in Kidesha (1152) and the Cathedral of Transfiguration in Pereiaslav/Zaliskyi (1152–1157). In the course of their researches, the authors came to the conclusion that typological architectural forms and principles of organisation of spatial structures, rather than individual details of plastics, determine the style of an architectural school.
