The report examines one of the important issues of modern linguodidactics – the role and place of lexical exercises, which contribute to the development of coherent speech of students-philologists who speak Russian well, but do not use it actively. Great importance is given to the formation of a sufficient vocabulary of future teachers of the Russian language, the ability to use and introduce new words into active use, the ability to work constantly on clarifying their lexical meaning. For this purpose at the Russian language classes various types of work are conducted, the important place among which have lexical exercises. The task of the teacher is to find among them the most optimal ones, which are suitable in this training situation. Particular attention is given to situational lexical exercises, which are built using the activation of cognitive activity. There are given the examples of lexical exercises designed for foreign students who know well the closely related language (Ukrainian). These exercises can be used during the teaching of the course “Culture of Russian Speech” for students of philology specialty "Russian language and literature" in the pedagogical university.
