Abstract

The article is devoted to the analysis of the depiction by Jarosław Leon Iwaszkiewicz of the period of Polish history during the Second World War. The purpose of this article is to characterize the artistic skill of the writer’s depiction of the individual life and the life of the Polish people during the fascist occupation using the material from the «Dzienników (Diaries) 1911–1955». Research methodology. The analysis used a synthesis of the fundamental methods and principles of scientific research, including primarily hermeneutic, textual, typological, poetological, and partly biographical in their interconnections and complementarities. Research results. For the first time in Ukrainian literary studies, the manifestation of such artistic skill of Iwaśkewicz has been revealed, which not only did not detract from the documentary value of his testimonies, but on the contrary, strengthened it. Practical significance. The results of the study can be used to study Polish literature of the 20th century, in particular the work of J. Iwaszkiewicz, the history of Poland through a human document with a comparison of the testimonies of other artists, for example, Wanda Talakowska (1905–1985), through Iwaszkiewicz's characterization of writers Jerzy Andrzejewski (1899–1980), Krzysztof Kamil Baczynski (1921–1944), Stanisław Ignaty Witkiewicz (1885–1939), Jan Lechon (Leszek Serafinowicz, 1899–1956), Julian Tuwim (1894–1953). Scientific observations and conclusions can be used as the basis for lecture courses in universities on the history of Polish literature, as well as in general education institutions with instruction in Polish.
