Abstract

Aim The aim of this study is the analysis of prose and poetry of Charles Baudelaire to explain the significance and role of urban themes in his works. This article examines the importance of the mid-nineteenth century Paris for the development of French literary tradition.

Methods The methodological basis of the study is a comprehensive approach to the research object that enables the full and thorough study of the subject. The significant number of critical materials and research works were studied in order to trace the tradition of the big city themes in French literature in general and in the writings of Baudelaire.

Results The article gives a detailed analysis of the contribution made by Baudelaire to the creation of the Paris’s image of the industrialization era. Baudelaire acts as the creator of a new modern aesthetics and becomes its first theorist. Special focus is on the problem of the individual opposed to the big city and the relationship between the poet and the city in the era of progress.

Scientific novelty The main idea of the article consisits of identification of internal and external factors which influenced the emergence both of the true interest toward the internal communication of the poet as well as the urban space, thus making the city a major source of Baudelaire’s inspiration.

Practical significance The article may serve for the further investigation of the problem of big city in French literature of 19th century, especially in Ukraine where this subject is very little researched.
