Interpretation of the motif of death in V. Stefanyk’s short story «Executed himself» and A. Chekhov’s story «Melancholy»

Abstract

Aim The article deals with the research of the motif of death in V. Stefanyk’s short story «Executedhimself» and A. Chekhov’s story «Melancholy».

Methods In the article has been applied literary-historical, typological and comparative cultural and historical methods.

Results In scope of comparative analysis there has been studied the semantics of the motif of death in V. Stefanyk’s short story «Executed himself» and A. Chekhov’s story «Melancholy», in particular there have been defined the peculiarities of the symbols, colors, artistic time and space and ritual in the texts.

Scientific novelty In the article the peculiarities of the motif of death in V. Stefanyk’s short story «Executed himself» and A. Chekhov’s story «Melancholy» are studied from the point of view of comparative literature for the first time.

The practical significance Material of the article can be used for further study of the literary process of the late 19th – early 20th century, including works by V. Stefanyk and A. Chekhov.
